Breakfast Trends: Yogurt Mess

This month I found a new food blog with a creative story book twist, Karina's "Like Some Cat from Japan" . She has not only inspired me through her personal life story but her breakfast bowls are something to be admired. I honestly can not get over Karina's colorful and flavorful combinations! If your oats are on a snooze cruise you must check out her blog. As an ode to the new found blog I made my own "yogurt mess" breakfast bowls. Enjoy!
Sunday's breakfast...

A "Yogurt Mess" of Old Fashion Oats and Vanilla Oiko's Yogurt. Mixed with cardamon soaked goji berries and pomegranate cashews.

Man how delicious are old fashion oats! My father made a huge batch and we've got tons of leftovers at my casa. I remember looking at him like he was crazy, since we all know oat bran captured my heart for some time now, but the chewy texture was delightful! Isn't it funny how we go through phases with food? Another forgotten food is goji berries, I guess raisins and cranberries have taken their place in my breakfast creations but they use to be such a favorite! Just soak them for a few minutes in your favorite tea, milk or spiced infused water before adding them to your oats...so nummy! By the way, I bought more Oiko's! What once loved foods have you forgotten?

Today's breakfast...

Chocolate Chip Orange Cookie Crumbles and Banana Coconut Oat Bran with Cinnamon Cashew Butter

Sadly I am all finished with the orange cookie but it sure was heavenly! I could say it was my very favorite but I haven't tried the others so I could be swayed differently. This bowl of oats was really delicious, I know I say that just about every morning but it seriously had my taste buds all happy. So many flavors! Of course none of my yogurt bowls are even close to Katrina's lovely ones but she is a huge source of inspiration to just add what I like and go with it. It seemed to really work!

Three tips to an awesome "mess":
1) Yogurt- I prefer regular vanilla organic yogurt but Greek yogurt makes it extra thick and creamy. My secret is I mix half a tablespoon of cinnamon into my yogurt. Once it gets warmed up by the oats it tastes like the inside of a cinnamon roll!!
2) Grains- I like to soak steel cut oats overnight and warm them a tad in the morning. They are extra chewy and pair perfectly with the yogurt. Of course any type would work.
3) Toppings- It's really up to you but I love to mix in a variety of nuts, spices and cookies, granola is just as delicious too!
Do you like "yogurt messes"?

Have an awesome day and enjoy some of my favorite current recipes...

Lovin' these recipes:
Kabocha Squash Butter
Autumn Tempeh Salad
Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Butternut Pumpkin Pizza
Banana Bread in a Bowl
And like Mitri said, Soy Nog is back..can you say Soy Nog Oats? Yumm

What do you think the next breakfast trend will be?

  1. Pomegranate cashews??? Be still, my beating heart.

My favorite forgotten food would have to be Bejing Style Seitan from this lovely vegan restaurant:

If you're in NYC sometime, definitely check it out! I haven't eaten there in ages. Used to eat there at least once a week, but had to stop because it's pricey.

I feel a little rigid because I always order that dish when I go there, but man, I can't help it.

  2. Who doesn't like yogurt messes???
    they are so good!

But when I mix it into oats, I call it ''swiss oats'' or ''overnight oats'' :)

Jam is a great topping (raspberry, marmalade...). Cocoa powder is yummy too :)

    Thnks for the cinnamon tip!

  8. That is too funny! When I tried those cookies I also crumbled my chocolate chip orange one into my oats :) SOOO GOOD! And the chocolate chips melted.

I'm with Maya on this one. On Sunday I had granola with warm milk - muy delicioso. Actually riht now I'm eating yogurt mess that consists of Trader Joe's PB filled pretzels crushed up over vanila yogurt + crushed up butter fingers and some raspberry jam lol.

I had an old love the other day and that was Cream of Wheat. I use to be obsessed with avocados when they were on sale for one whole month. Then they got back to regular price and I'd forgotten how expensive they are lol.
